New Artist Focus: KJ Abudu on Gelare Khoshgozaran | LUX
An essay on the work of Gelare Khoshgozaran, published in LUX, as part of their New Artist Focus series. Situating Khoshgozaran’s practice in an emergent field of contemporary anti-colonial cinematic interventions, the text analyses how Khoshgozaran’s skilful camera work, lyrical editing style, and poetic image-sound deconstructions push documentary and essay-film genres into indeterminate affective, oneiric zones. Khoshgozaran’s films’ formal manoeuvres, I suggest, allow us to contend with the phenomenological dimensions of imperiality and its historical anti-colonial and anti-fascist discontents, alongside the untranslatable subjective expressions of exiled, borderless imaginaries.
